- Public Health Dentistry is a unique dental specialty that deals with the prevention and control of oral diseases, which treats the community as a patient rather than the individual.
- The Department, First to start a postgraduate course in the subject in Gujarat, seeks to provide quality dental care at affordable costs to the underprivileged and underserved sections of society, by improving access to it.
- Firmly rooted to the principles of Evidence Based Education System, the Department’s academic and research activities are connected to realistic transformations in the Community Arena, with focus on applied epidemiology, dynamic psycho-social environment and recent advances.
- The Department conducts outreach activities- screening camps, awareness programs and treatment camps which sensitizes the students to the dental needs of the community, especially towards those sections for whom quality dental care remains a distant prospect. The Department has a mobile dental van, a dental clinic on wheels, to cater the oral health and treatment needs of population living in remote areas and non- ambulatory patients. The department engages local community leaders, and institutional or organizational heads as partners of oral healthcare delivery.
- Peripheral centers of the Department provide opportunities for developing cultural competency, service-learning, community skills among students. The Department of Public Health Dentistry has an Oral Health Museum, which showcases charts, models, novel health education materials viz. Spin Wheels, Selfie booth etc. The walls of the museum are vividly painted and bear oral health educations quotes imprinted. The museum is utilized for giving health education to patients in groups or customized to the health care needs of the patient. The Department has taken care to upgrade the museum and health education media and materials to keep up the students’ interest in health education activities as well as to effectively cater to the changing society. Some of the recent additions to the LED rotating models, Story books of Superheroes and fairies have been designed with dental themes, T shirts, caps, wrist bands, badges, and pens with oral health quotes, oral health snake and ladder game etc.
Special Clinic- Tobacco Cessation Centre
- Tobacco Cessation Center (TCC) of K M Shah Dental College in Hospital, functions within the ambit of Department of Public Health Dentistry. It is an additional and integral unit of specialized care, order to aid persons willing to quit tobacco habit through structured tobacco cessation counselling. The TCC is registered with the Gujarat State Tobacco Cessation Council-(Ref. STCC/NTCP/TCC/313-15/2021-22).
- The centre functions as per the rules, provisions and regulations prescribed by the Dental Council of India. Center offers detailed evaluation which focuses on severity of their addiction and use, their motivation to quit and accordingly counsels and offers remedies for quitting the habit.
