The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Established in 1999 and introducing its post-graduation program in 2007, PhD Program in 2013 and stands as a comprehensive institution dedicated to a diverse array of surgical procedures and advanced patient care. The training of undergraduate (UG) students is meticulously designed to instil the ability to adeptly discern and manage complex cases, either independently or under the vigilant guidance of the faculty. Drawing postgraduate (PG) scholars from across India, the program not only ensures a holistic exposure to the expansive realm of maxillofacial surgery but also offers avenues for advanced training.
Enveloped in all sub-specialties of Maxillofacial surgery, PG students actively participate in more than 100 major surgical procedures on an average annually, benefiting from the seasoned mentorship of experts. In a commitment to diversity, the department reserves a specific quota for Jain minority students seeking admission to the PG program. Furthermore, a specialized elective Oncology Surgical training initiative refines the proficiency of PG students in cancer management procedures, and placements in renowned institutions such as Gujarat Cancer Research Institute or Kailash Cancer Hospital, Goraj, allow for collaboration with luminaries and the utilization of cutting-edge technology to elevate their surgical acumen.
Beyond its educational and advanced care pursuits, the department is distinguished by its frequent organization of free surgical camps, extending benevolence to the community. Operating as a 24/7/365 days tertiary care facility in the central Gujarat area, it ensures continuous accessibility to comprehensive healthcare services. Residents benefit from exposure to thousands of casualty cases, enriching their practical knowledge and expertise.
In addition to its comprehensive training program, the department takes pride in extending excellent care and treatment to patients with cleft and congenital craniofacial anomalies. Recognizing the unique challenges posed by these conditions, the department is dedicated to providing specialized and compassionate care to individuals affected by cleft lip, cleft palate, and other congenital craniofacial anomalies. The specialized care involves a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing various facets of oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and related fields. The objective is not only to address the physical aspects of these conditions but also to enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for patients.
Within the department, the Dental Implantology Department takes a center stage, focusing on the replacement of missing teeth with artificial tooth roots (implants) that support prosthetic teeth. This specialized field involves surgical procedures to place implants into the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for crowns, bridges, or dentures. Postgraduates independently perform all implant placements under expert guidance. The scope of rehabilitation 0procedures based on implants is expansive, including conventional implants, pterygoid implants, corticobasal implants, and zygomatic implants.
The faculty within the department is characterized by a remarkable combination of talent and experience, boasting a diverse range of expertise, spectrums, and visions in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. With an average experience exceeding 25 years, the faculty members bring a wealth of knowledge and a nuanced understanding of the complexities inherent in their respective specialties. Notably, the faculty's commitment to advancing the field is evident through their prolific research contributions. Having conducted over 65 research projects, their work has garnered recognition and impact, with more than 400 citations globally. This signifies not only the depth of their engagement in scholarly pursuits but also the dissemination of their findings to the broader academic and medical community worldwide. Such a rich blend of experience, vision, and a robust research portfolio ensures that the faculty remains at the forefront of advancements in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Their collective expertise serves as a valuable resource for both students and the broader medical community, contributing to the overall growth and innovation within the field.
The department's repertoire of procedures, spanning from exodontia to major surgeries, exemplifies its commitment to education and advanced care. Complimentary exodontia treatments and seamless integration into the Ayushman Yojana for major surgical interventions underscore a commitment to community well-being and healthcare inclusivity.
Vision
- The department envisions a transformative journey, evolving from a regionally renowned Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery unit to one of national acclaim, NAAC A++ accreditation and, eventually, global recognition. Its aspiration extends beyond being a standard oral and maxillofacial unit to emerging as a super-specialty Craniofacial and Head and Neck Cancer unit.
- Central to this vision is the commitment to providing comprehensive training to undergraduate (UG) students, empowering them to diagnose and manage challenging cases independently or under faculty supervision. For postgraduate (PG) students, the department provides opportunities to master advanced surgical procedures, fostering both independent and collaborative skills. The goal is to equip PG students to deliver competent services at peripheral centers, contributing to the broader healthcare landscape.
- The department aspires to elevate the status of oral and maxillofacial surgeons within the medical fraternity in India, aligning recognition and respect with the standards set in developed nations. This vision underscores a commitment to excellence, continuous advancement, and a global perspective in the field of Craniofacial and Head and Neck Cancer surgery.
Mission
- The mission of the department is dedicated to democratizing access to maxillofacial surgery treatment, extending its reach from tertiary centers to the peripheries. This ambitious objective involves the training of graduates and postgraduates to attain global competence in the field of maxillofacial surgery. To realize this mission, the department is committed to integrating an evidence-based education system into its practices.
- A key facet of the mission is the cultivation of a mindset that embraces the adoption of the best global practices, with a simultaneous commitment to modifying and implementing these practices to suit the unique needs of the local community. By instilling this adaptability and responsiveness, the department aims to bridge the gap between global standards and the specific requirements of the communities it serves. Ultimately, the mission seeks to create a network of globally competent practitioners and contribute to the availability of advanced maxillofacial surgery treatments across diverse geographic locations, including peripheral areas.
Objectives
- The training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is meticulously structured with the overarching goal of cultivating comprehensive competence. This encompasses not only the acquisition of knowledge and proficiency in theoretical and surgical skills but also the development of a holistic set of attributes, including the right attitude, effective communicative skills, and the ability to engage in research. The program emphasizes an understanding of the social, cultural, educational, and environmental context in which oral and maxillofacial surgery is practiced.
- One of the primary objectives is to instill in trainees a profound understanding and applicable knowledge of basic and systemic medical sciences, placing a particular emphasis on the intricate aspects related to the head and neck region. This multifaceted approach ensures that practitioners possess a well-rounded foundation that extends beyond the technical aspects of surgery to encompass broader medical and anatomical considerations.
- Furthermore, the program is designed to equip participants with the capability to deliver oral surgical treatments of both basic and advanced nature, adhering to international standards. The emphasis on providing quick and efficient treatments underscores the commitment to offering timely and high-quality care to patients. Importantly, the program aims to make such oral surgical treatments accessible by ensuring that they are affordable to a diverse patient population.
- In essence, the training program aspires to produce oral and maxillofacial surgeons who not only possess exceptional technical skills but are also attuned to the broader societal context, providing a holistic and globally competitive approach to oral and maxillofacial surgery.
